KindleRomance

I love reading romantic, steamy love stories with lots of dialogue and a solid HEA.
M/M & PNR are my favorites.

Book Reviews - Getting Caught Up

Run this Town #1 & #2 by Avril Ashton

I just devoured these two books. Raw and gritty and definitely not sweet romances. Rival gangs, bloodshed, intense jealousy. Enjoyable for something different. I already bought the 3rd one but wanted to take a break so that it still feels edgy when I read it.

Strange Bedfellows by Cardeno C

Loved this story! Very typical story by this author - excellent writing, very sweet, great characters. One of my favorite authors and this book was perfect for me.

Love is an Open Road

Trying to make a point of reading these as much as possible. I hate negatively reviewing stories that are free even though I love when other people do. I've read a few that were good, but here are the ones I enjoyed enough to recommend:

An American Homo in Paris by Vanessa North

Ten Simple Tips for Surviving the Apocalypse by Cari Z (I also LOVED her book from last year's event.)

Waiting for Clark by Annabeth Albert

I also read Cronin's Key #1& 2 by NR Walker and enjoyed both of them.

I've read several of these books and they were really good. This is a great deal!

Mad Max: Fury Road and Ex Machina

I saw Mad Max in 3D yesterday and loved it! Not much of a plot, but just enough. Pure action and definitely one worth paying to see in 3D. It had me on the edge of my seat and was very realistic. I saw a bit about how it was filmed, and it makes sense why it felt so real.

Exact opposite was Ex Machina. The previews made it seem like a thriller, but it was nothing like that. Extremely cerebral, I found this look into a future with Artificial Intelligence fascinating. It was almost all dialogue with very little action; the complete opposite of Mad Max.

I really enjoyed both of these movies, and I hope the summer continues like this!

Sick and tired of being sick:-(

This is the second cold I've had this year that's knocked me on my back for several days. Are colds getting worse or is my age causing this extreme reaction? I barely have enough symptoms to even consider going to the doctor's, but I'm so tired I can't sit up for more than 30 minutes at a time. The worst part is that I can't focus long enough to read. Ugh.

Axel's Pup (Werewolves & Dragons #1) By Kim Dare (5 Stars)

Axel's Pup (Werewolves & Dragons Book 1) - Kim Dare

5 Stars! Perfect from beginning to end, this was an extremely engaging and beautiful love story that I found impossible to put down.

Axel Carmichael owns a pub and leads a motorcycle gang. The gang is his family, and he's generally a happy person. He's also an amazing Dom, and he's fortunate enough to find the perfect sub in Bayden. Bayden Wolf is completely focused on the single goal of making enough money to take care of his mom and grandfather. The fastest way to make the money he needs is by winning fights and getting paid for sex. As a wolf shifter, he heals quickly from physical damage, but the psychological damage these activities has caused is a different story. Fortunately, the love and support of Axel will eventually help him heal.

The focus of the story is on Axel trying to help Bayden heal and learn to respect himself. I enjoyed the dialogue between Axel and Bayden and felt it really helped to make the characters and their relationship believable. The aspects related to the wolf shifter world were extremely interesting. There was rampant discrimination against the wolf shifters and it was heart-breaking reading about how it affected their lives. The same type of discrimination continues to take place in the real world making it even harder to read about. Seeing the direct impact it had on Bayden's life, including his battered-down emotional outlook, was very challenging. Axel recognized this and spent the necessary time trying to truly understand the world Bayden lived in. It was just one of the many ways that Axel showed his love for Bayden. Bayden thought it was an acceptable part of his life to fight and have sex for money as long as he felt he was controlling the situation. It was very hard to watch Bayden endure, among other things, sadistic knife play without the use of a safe word. Watching Bayden heal under Axel's guidance was touching. Bayden's desire to truly and completely submit to Axel was the best gift he could give Axel.

The majority of the story was spent in Axel's pub but they also spent time riding their bikes and visiting Bayden's family. The interactions with the other friends and family helped to further develop the world and the characters.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the steamy sex scenes between these two people who cared about each other so much. There was bondage, spanking, caning, and some breath play. Although Bayden performed sexual acts with other people at the beginning of the story, it was only related to his need to earn money.

You have to wonder when you read a story of this length if there is going to be unnecessary filler, endless narrative and wasted pages. You definitely won't find that in Axel's Pup. No doubt, it's a hefty book, but I was so consumed by the story that the pages flew by. Every word and scene contributed to the building of the relationship and the deeper understanding of the characters. It will be in my top reads for 2015! I'm thrilled that this is the beginning of a series which means I might get a chance to see these two characters again.

I highly recommend this Dom/sub love story with its richly developed characters and interesting shifter world.

Duck (Avian Shifters #1) by Kim Dare (5 Stars)

Duck! - Kim Dare

Two shifters fall in love based on an incorrect assumption. Can their love survive when the truth comes out?

Ori is a fledgling looking forward to his full transformation into a duck. He’s living and working with a group of other avian shifters, but the other shifters are physically and emotionally abusing him. Fortunately, most of the abuse is described during flashbacks with minimal detail.

Raynard recently lost his uncle and is now responsible for taking over all of his business dealings. He’s beyond angry at Ori’s treatment, and decides to take Ori in as his own servant. They quickly settle into a beautiful, loving relationship as Raynard discovers Ori is the perfect submissive for him. Ori would do anything for Raynard and the feelings are mutual. These two take care of each other in so many ways. Ori creates a true home for Raynard, while Raynard protects Ori and builds his self-confidence.

As certain events unfold, Raynard makes a sacrifice out of his pure love for Ori. Although my heart was breaking, and tears were streaming down my face, I was also touched by their deep love for each other. As always, the author delivers on her promise of a happy ending.

Ivana March runs a very special toy shop in the heart of Victorian London. The last person she expects to see enter it is an earl. Not that she has time to entertain him. Someone is stealing children, and the street kids whisper tales of a “Metal Man”. Ivana must find the monster, rescue the children, and if the earl really wants to help, he can come with her. Only, no one warned her she’d have to venture to places better left unexplored. A good thing, then, that the new Earl of Somer is a noted explorer. When the two of them join forces, what could possibly go wrong?

Understanding Jeremy (Discovering Me #2) by A.M. Arthur (4.5 Stars)

This was a much lighter read than the first one in the series. The relationship between Jeremy and Cole deepens as they learn more about each other. I was very relieved that the blurb for the story, regarding the pregnancy, only took up about 5 pages. The real focus was on these two determining where they fit in each other’s lives for the long haul. I truly believed in their HEA and was left with a smile at the end.

BLURB

No one in Jeremy Collins’s life ever stays. His parents, sister, and wife are all dead. Now he has taken Cole Alston into his home to help him recover from years of abuse at the hands of his ex. Jeremy hopes Cole, who he loves, will stick around, but after eight years of Cole not being allowed to make his own choices, Jeremy doesn’t think he has the right to ask. As Jeremy keeps his concerns and desires to himself, his best friend Bethann calls on him for a huge favor–claim he’s the father of her baby so she isn’t ostracized in their small town for sleeping with a married man. However doing so would be tantamount to denying his relationship with Cole. Rumors fly before Jeremy can explain to Cole that he said no, and suddenly the whole town is in his business. Rather than reassure Cole, Jeremy’s explanations have the opposite effect. Something is going on in Cole’s mind that Jeremy doesn’t know about, and in order to get Cole to talk, Jeremy will need to confront his own deepest fear.

Unearthing Cole (Discovering Me #1) by A.M. Arthur (4.5 Stars)

Unearthing Cole - A.M. Arthur, JP Handler

This was not an easy book to read from the standpoint that Cole has not had a pleasant life. His parents were hoarders, and now that they both passed away, Cole has to clean up the mess. He finally escaped a physically and mentally abusive relationship, but even years of therapy haven’t completely freed his mind. Jeremy was the best thing that ever happened to Cole, and their relationship seemed so natural and easy. We only get Cole’s POV in this story, but I’m looking forward to Jeremy’s in the next story. The story ended with an HFN, but with a little imagination, I could see it as an HEA if you didn’t want to continue the series.
